A new stage in the “Monnet project”

The feasibility study carried out into the prospective new pan-European card system initiated in 2008 by the leading French and German banks showed that there is a real opportunity for French banks, the market and all users to put together a pan-European card system, removing the need to rely on international systems alone.

In the autumn of 2009, the second phase of the "Monnet project" began: talks with the European authorities and the presentation of the project specifications to Europe's leading banks, in order to verify their interest and the project's viability. These talks, which are scheduled to end in early 2010, are aimed at deciding which European organisation is best placed to carry out an in-depth study of the prospective new card system that could become a reality in two to three years.
